The 1st Asia Pacific OutGames attracted over 1,600 participants, and the Opening Celebration was just the beginning in a series of spectacular events.
Despite the Band’s unconventional formation, with members split evenly on either side of the catwalk, our opening of the show was the perfect way to start the night. We had the stage to ourselves for our opening number, Hairspray, a real crowd pleaser. This was followed by the parade of athletes, led by the marching boys from Vic Presence.
As the athletes began to enter, the Band struck up Homophonics, a medley of camp classics which couldn’t have suited the night better. With the athletes in place, it was time for the national anthem – for which we received the outstanding compliment that it sounded pre-recorded.
Most of us stayed to enjoy the rest of the show after our performance, and join in the celebration. It was a memorable night, and on a scale unlike any other GLBTI event in recent years. Congratulations to all!
