    It’s back! After a triumphant return in 2022, the Melbourne Rainbow Band’s legendary trivia night is on once again. Hosted the irrepressible Frock Hudson. Join us to test your grey matter, win fabulous prizes and raise funds for the Melbourne Rainbow Band.

    The Melbourne Rainbow Band is proud to present Gayme On!

    Video games have risen to new levels, not only in graphics, but also in providing a musical repertoire that rivals the scores of some of the best Hollywood movies.

    Prepare yourselves for exciting thrills and spills, with dragons, danger, mystery, and suspense guaranteed.

    Video games not your thing? Don’t panic! You may be surprised to learn that some of your favourite board games also come with their very own tunes…anyone up for a game of chess?

    Dust off your last Halloween costume, or start designing that cosplay, and get ready to join us for a wonderous afternoon full of laughter and nostalgia as we journey through the amazing music provided by the world of games.

    Oh, and we should mention, there is of course a prize for the best dressed audience members!

  • Open Rehearsal

    Thursday 12th of March.

    We are once again holding an open rehearsal. Get your instrument out of the closet and give us a try.

    While new members are welcome at any time, the open rehearsal provides a great opportunity for players of woodwind, brass or percussion instruments who may be interested in becoming a member of the Melbourne Rainbow Band to sit in on a rehearsal and meet the band.

    Membership of the band is open to people of almost any musical skill level, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

    The Band endeavours to cater to a wide variety of musical abilities and its members range in skill, from a basic ability to read music to professional musicians and educators. A scholarship is awarded annually within the band to encourage members who are developing their music skills.

    The open rehearsal will be held in the Prahran RSL Memorial Hall, High Street on Thursday 12th of March 2020.

  • Picnic at Forest Glade – 26th January 2020

    Enjoy a picnic in the beautiful gardens at Forest Glade, Mount Macedon with other members of Melbourne’s gender and sexually diverse community.

    Pack a picnic rug and go all out with your most gourmet of picnic hampers and enjoy lunch in one of Australia’s finest private gardens, only an hour from Melbourne.

    GLIBTQ car club, Motafrenz will be there with some cars on display. And the Melbourne Gay and Lesbian Chorus and the Melbourne Rainbow Band will be adding a musical touch while you take leisurely strolls through the fourteen acres of magnificent landscaped gardens.

    Located on Mount Macedon Road, gates will be open from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday, January 26. Entry is $10 for adults and kids are free. Proceeds go towards supporting the Chorus and the Band.

    In order to keep these spectacular gardens looking just so, BBQs and pets are not permitted.

    Sunscreen, good food, good company and a designated driver are highly recommended.

    Getting there:
    Driving from Melbourne, follow the Calder Freeway and take exit C322 to Mt Macedon. Once you are off the freeway follow Mt Macedon Road toward MOUNT Macedon (as opposed to Macedon). After driving through Mt Macedon, Forest Glade is on the right-hand side – look for the rainbow flags and be sure to park safely and clear of the white line on the side of the road.

  • Open Connections

    The Melbourne Rainbow Band, Shepparton Brass and Wind and the OUTintheOPEN festival invite you to to the City of Shepparton for a one night only gala concert, Open Connections!

    This show will connect City to Country, and stimulate pride and diversity through music.

    The two bands will perform a selection of their favourite music, and then team up with over 50 musicians on stage for a huge big band experience. This concert will feature the world premiere of a brand new concert band arrangement, ” The Road Returning” by celebrated composer Matt Klohs.

    OUTintheOPEN is Shepparton’s annual festival celebrating LGBTI+ pride and community diversity.

    This concert is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria. Entry is by gold coin donation to Goulburn Valley Pride and it’s nominated charities.

    Who has never had a crush on a Leading Lady? The Melbourne Rainbow Band and guest artists celebrate these iconic dames of stage and screen through a program of music and song.

    In our first appearance at the Melbourne Fringe Festival, we are proud to feature the vocal talents of Sue Hingston and Vincent Hooper.  Join us as we pay tribute to tribute to artistes including Ethel Merman, Marilyn Monroe, Barbra Streisand and Carole King.

  • “Over the Hills and Far Away” – Gasworks

    OTHAFA posterOnce upon a time, in a land of ‘Technicolour’ trees
    and ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ skies,
    there was a kingdom known as OTHAFA,
    where good acronyms were in short supply…

    The 17th October 2009 saw an eager and excited audience follow the Melbourne Rainbow Band on a journey through the mystic lands of OTHAFA. The king, with his trusty steed Tofu the peach poodle, journeyed through mighty forests and treacherous mountains to the Masonite City in search of The Wizard of Was. Along the way they encountered a vanity driven dragon and the Military Fairy, battled with the Wicked Wobins of the West, and finally returned to the Queen who had meanwhile improved her strokes at the Royal Golf Course.

    The comedic story, courtesy of musical director Mark Lyall, brought together an otherwise eclectic mix of music, including a lush selection of programmatic music (Hall of the Mountain King, Heart of Lithuania, Pilatus: Mountain of Dragons, Children’s March), film scores (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Shrek, Wizard of Oz) and swing numbers (Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, On a Clear Day).

    With stunning visuals and an eager cast, the Melbourne Rainbow Band produced a show that the audience confirmed was unsurpassed in the band’s history.
